Importance of Teachers Essay Example for Free
Importance of Teachers Essay A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where is influence stops. Henry Adams Teaching is a timeless profession. It is the basis of all other professions. Good teachers plant seed that make good doctors, good accountants, good public servants, good statesmen, good taxi drivers, and good astronauts. When former students return to see me over the years, my heart fills up in the knowledge that I have been part of a wonderful accumulation of experiences that followed them through life. Mary Bicouvaris. If your plan is for a year, plant rice. If your plan is for a decade, plant trees. If our plan is for a lifetime, educate children. Confucius I am a teacher because of teachers. They showed me that someone other than my mother could love me. Guy Doud In a completely rational society, the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something else. Lee Iacocca What else is needed is something that teachers themselves are reluctant to talk about openly and itââ¬â¢s our respect for them. Itââ¬â¢s what is missing in America, and itââ¬â¢s what has been too long withheld from a profession so important to our national well being, as important as doctors or captains of industry or TV commentators. From sunup to sundown, the school teachers you have seen tonight work harder than you do ââ¬â no matter what you do. No calling in our society is more demanding than teaching. No calling in our society is more selfless than teaching. No calling in our society is more central to the vitality of a democracy than teaching. Roger Mudd To me the sole hope of human salvation lies in teaching. George Bernard Shaw Each of these quotes speaks to me, not merely because I am a teacher, although that is part of it. Like Guy Doud, I am in part a teacher because of other teachers, and love ââ¬â directly expressed or not ââ¬â was certainly part of it. It was my AP American History teacher Thomas Rock who challenged me to live up to what I could do, and it was Music Professor John Davison who demonstrated the deep love for every student who passed through his care, including me. I hope that I return both lessons with my own students. I know the importance of respect. I cannot demand it from my students but must earn it, in large part by acting with respect towards them. It might be helpful were the media and many politicians and far too many parents not reinforcing a different attitude. In part it is because we do not pay teachers, and if they make so little, they cannot be that important, right? Except, as I might note, in one 45 minute period I spend more quality time with some of my students than they get from their parents, which is a different tragedy. Our society needs to reexamine how we value people, and not have such an emphasis on money and overt power. The Henry Adams quote is one I have long cherished. The affects of my own teachers continue on me today. And I have now taught long enough to be no longer be surprised at some of the students who come back to thank me. It worries me that some of my long-term affects upon students might not be so salutary, which is one reason I try to be aware of how my words and actions can have impact far beyond their immediate purpose. I am only in my 13th year of teaching, but am already experiencing some of what Mary Bicouvaris writes about. If you are a parent, you have every right to demand that your childrenââ¬â¢s teachers see them as individuals, but please remember yours may be one of almost 200 children that teacher deals with every day. If you want more personal attention for your child, demand smaller classrooms, lower student loads per teacher so that they are capable of giving that attention. If you are a policy maker, remember that the decisions you make can support or prevent the kind of teaching environment that makes a difference in the life of a child. Teaching is about much more than cramming information into heads so that it can be given back on high stakes tests which really do not tell us all that much useful information. All of us have had teachers. And even if we were too shy, or too stubborn, to express our thanks at the time, we can always drop a note or make a call, or if possible stop by and say hello, and thank those who made a difference for us. Sometimes we worry about the students who pass through our care, that we did not do enough, care enough, and it can help a teacher who is wondering whether to continue the struggle to hear of the differences s/he made. Sometimes that can be the one thing that keeps a teacher going for one more year. I know I can make a difference. And I am not making these requests on my own behalf. But while I claim to speak for no one except myself, I also acknowledge that I have a voice ââ¬â and a keyboard ââ¬â that seems to be able to express in ways others may not be able to, to reach eyes and ears and minds to which many do not have access. So this is my offering today. It is about the importance of teachers. You probably already know about that importance, but I figured a gentle reminder might not hurt. Peace.

Free College Essays - Analysis of William Shakespeares Sonnet 19
William Shakespeare is considered to be one of the most significant English poets and dramatists of all time. Shakespeare is credited with writing 36-38 dramatic works and many sonnets. In most of the sonnets the form is of three separate quatrains and a closing couplet for emotional and dramatic climax. Some sonnets seem open and addressed to the world. Others are too cryptic and personal to be intelligible. Sonnets 18-125 deal gradually with many themes associate with a handsome young man. The poet enjoys his friendship and promises to immortalize him through his poems. ââ¬Å"Sonnet 19" is addressed to time and is dedicated to a very special friend. In the first quatrain of the sonnet, the author talks about the devastating effects of time: it affects everything and nothing can escape its impact. The poet directly addresses time and vividly describes its effect on the sharp claws of the lion. Time wears away their strength, spoiling and eroding them. Shakespeare then writes that time forces the earth to ââ¬Å"...devoure her owne fweet broodâ⬠(2). Everything that is born of the earth return...

Through punishments, society is being molded and shaped into what your parents, teachers, and bosses want
Everyday we go out and do the things we do. Everyone lives a different life and sees things differently. But most of the punishments are the same. We behave in certain ways to avoid consequences that authority figures have put out there. Through these punishments, society is being molded and shaped into what your parents, teachers, and bosses want. What your parents, teachers, and bosses want can be exactly what the government wants you to be. The government controls behavior through the punishments it enforces. They set the standards on how people should act and how they should respond to certain situations. If these people act in a way not appropriate to societies standards, then they will be punished. This punishment will try to control the behaviors of these people. It will try to shape the person into what society wants. Punishments are not the only way to control someone's behavior. People use rewards to keep someone happy and to control the behavior. More than likely, if you do something and you get rewarded, you will like it and behave in the same matter again later. I see society as a place where punishments are used more than rewards. They see that punishing an individual is easier than rewarding them. It seems like those that are punished severely and taken to jail, come out of jail and find there way back. This is because some people are punished in the wrong way and sent to jail. Once out of jail, society sees that they have been punished and put them as outcast. These people now have a harder time functioning in society because the government thinks they have changed these individual's behaviors. In reality, they come out of jail with no opportunity available. No one will hire these people because they are now seen as criminals. They try to find jobs but no one reaches out to them because of the punishment they have received. Now these individuals find themselves in a dilemma. They need to eat and feed their families but have no way of doing so. They have to commit crimes to get want they want because society has put them out. Society and the people in it are not perfect and mistakes are made. We use punishment to control behavior so we can predict what they will do and control those around us. We need to understand that punishment can be good if used correctly. But if punishment is used incorrectly, it will hurt society in the long run and make life much harder to live.

Pride and Prejudice: Mr Collins proposes Essay
Mr Collins proposes to both Elizabeth and Charlotte but their reactions are very different. What does the behaviour of all three characters during chapters 19, 20 & 22 tell us about the different attitudes to marriage in the early nineteenth century? Throughout the book Pride & Prejudice, there are many different views towards marriage expressed. For example, Elizabeth Bennet wishes to marry for love whereas Charlotte Lucas doesnââ¬â¢t mind marrying someone she doesnââ¬â¢t love just for the security of marriage. Mr Collins, on the other hand, wants to marry to set a good example as the vicar, and on the advice from Lady Catherine de Bough. These attitudes are different from ours today in that women today donââ¬â¢t need the security of marriage and rarely marry without even liking their prospective partner. In chapter six, Elizabeth shows that she only wishes to marry for love and not for money or security. When Charlotte tells Lizzie her advice, that you should know as little as possible about your partner before you marry them, Lizzie says ââ¬Å"You make me laugh Charlotteâ⬠¦you would never act this way yourself!â⬠This shows that Lizzie does not agree with this view of marriage and finds it slightly ridiculous. This is similar to our attitude to marriage today in that, like women today, Lizzie wants to know her partner properly, unlike Charlotte, and love them before she marries them. Mr Collins proposes to Lizzie in chapter 19, but Lizzie declines because she does not love or even like him. This is very admirable of her as many women in her situation would have accepted purely for the security of being able to stay in her family home. However Mr Collins perseveres in his proposal, convinced she is only joking when she refuses him, and she becomes more adamant, saying ââ¬Å"I am perfectly serious in my refusal ââ¬â you could not make me happy, and I am convinced that I am the last woman in the world who could make you so.â⬠This shows she is headstrong and will only ever marry for love. Her mother Mrs Bennet wants Lizzie to marry Mr Collins so that Lizzie will be in financial security and be able to stay at Longbourn. However Mr Bennet doesnââ¬â¢t want her to marry Mr Collins because he knows she doesnââ¬â¢t like him and wants her to be happy, also he doesnââ¬â¢t want her to have a marriage like his and Mrs Bennetââ¬â¢s because they didnââ¬â¢t marry for love. When Charlotte tells Lizzie she has accepted Mr Collinsââ¬â¢ proposal, Lizzie is very surprised. She says ââ¬Å"Engaged to Mr Collins! My dear Charlotte ââ¬â impossible!â⬠which shows that she cannot believe her friend would get engaged to him so soon after she herself refused him. This tells us that her attitude to marriage is very different from her friendââ¬â¢s and that she canââ¬â¢t contemplate Charlotte marrying Mr Collins even though she does not like him In chapter 15, Mr Collinsââ¬â¢ attitude to marriage is described. He has decided to marry now because he has a good house and a very sufficient income, therefore he has a better chance of getting a wife as he can offer financial security. He chooses one of the Bennet girls to make amends with the family as he is to inherit Longbourn. This is not a good reason for marrying. He originally wanted to propose to Jane, however Mrs Bennet informs Mr Collins that Jane is ââ¬Ësoon to be engagedââ¬â¢, so he changes his mind to Lizzie instead. This shows that his ââ¬Ëloveââ¬â¢ for Lizzie cannot be true because she is his ââ¬Ësecond choiceââ¬â¢. Also it tell us that he is desperate to get married so wonââ¬â¢t give up that easily. When he proposes to Lizzie he states his reasons for marrying all in the wrong order. He mentions that ââ¬Å"I think it a right thing for every clergyman in easy circumstances (like myself) to set the example of matrimony in his parishâ⬠and ââ¬Å"I am convinced it will add greatly to my happinessâ⬠all before he mentions any love for Lizzie. When Lizzie turns him down he cannot understand why and thinks she is joking. He says ââ¬Å"â⬠¦it is usual with young ladies to reject the addresses of the man who they secretly mean to acceptâ⬠¦I am therefore by no means discouraged.â⬠This shows he is very arrogant and thinks very highly of himself. Also, the fact that he would be prepared to marry a woman who does not even like him tells us that he is desperate to get a wise and that he doesnââ¬â¢t want to displease Lady Catherine de Bough and has advised him to marry. He proposes to Charlotte just three days after Lizzie refuses him. This tells us that his ââ¬Ëloveââ¬â¢ for Lizzie was false as he moved on so fast. Also, if he had loved Lizzie his love for Charlotte could not have been true as he would not have gotten over Lizzie. In chapter 6 Charlotte talks to Lizzie about her views on marriage. She says to Lizzie ââ¬Å"Happiness in marriage is entirely and matter of chance.â⬠This tells us that she doesnââ¬â¢t mind if she marries someone she doesnââ¬â¢t love, because it is a matter of chance if she is happy or not. This is very different to our attitude to marriage today as people today marry for love and donââ¬â¢t share Charlotteââ¬â¢s views that happiness is a matter of chance. She accepts Mr Collinsââ¬â¢ proposal because he has a good house and income and can offer her financial security. It is not surprising that she accepts because she is close to becoming an old maid and her views of marriage show that she does not want to marry for love but for security. This changes my opinion of her in that she is not as headstrong as Lizzie because she is so desperate for the security of marriage that she is happy to marry Mr Collins, whom she does not love. However, she followed her own advice from previous chapters and sticks to her views, which is admirable. Elizabethââ¬â¢s attitude to marriage is closest to our views today; she believes in marrying for love and not for security like her good friend Charlotte. Charlotteââ¬â¢s views reflect early nineteenth century attitudes to marriage. She believes in marrying purely for the security of marriage, and money. She accepts Mr Collinsââ¬â¢ proposal because he can offer her financial security and a good home, and this supports the views she expressed in earlier chapters. Mr Collins come to Longbourn to find a wife on the advice of Lady Catherine de Bough, whom he idolizes, and because he thinks it will set a good example in his parish. His attitude is quite different from today, as people today make their own choices about marriage and do not need to set a good example in their life and job by being married. I agree most with Lizzieââ¬â¢s views on marriage because I think to be happy in marriage you should marry for love and not money or security. I do not agree with the early nineteenth century views on marriage because nowadays we do not need to marry for money or for a good home.

Global Perspective Project essays
Global Perspective Project essays Jamaicans have a long history of immigration to the United States, especially since the end of World War Two. Most immigrant from Jamaica settled in New York, and in Queens particularly. When Jenny and her family arrived in New York, they were greeted by a flourishing Jamaican community with deep roots. Moreover, Jenny's relatives had moved there five years earlier and sponsored them for American residency. Jenny started preschool immediately after arriving; her mother works both at Jenny's junior high school and at JFK international airport; and her father is a cook at a Queens-area rehabilitation center. The family struggles but they make ends meet. They passionately support Jenny's education and value her academic achievement. Jenny herself is highly motivated both in school and in extra-curricular activities, especially sports. She runs track formally in school and jogs with her father nearly every day at a local park. When investigating Jenny's funds of knowledge, it is important to reflect on her Jamaican heritage. Both her parents speak Patois, which they use to converse with their relatives and with other Jamaicans in the community. Jenny understands Patois and occasionally uses it at home or in the Jamaican community but does not speak it as much as her parents because unlike her parents, Jenny has lived in Brooklyn since she was two years old. Patois should be viewed as a fund of knowledge because of the way language helps define communities. As Gandi & Evering note, "A boundary is something used to express one's membership in a specific ethnic group. Jamaican Patois serves as a boundary for the Jamaican-American community." Because the Jamaican community has nurtured Jenny's family, easing their transition from the island to New York, it is also important to investigate sources of Jenny's funds of knowledge that are within the community. Some of Jenny's father's coworkers have become family friends and likewise, Jenny's mo...
